Modifying today's car engines is remarkably simple. Whereas in the past, it was necessary to change carburetors, ignition and exhaust to obtain a few meager additional horsepower, today it's enough to modify the engine injection scheme. We're talking almost exclusively about turbo-diesel engines. Complicated? "Not at all, the modification takes from 30 seconds to 5 minutes at most," explains Philippe Heeren (www.ptronic.be), a specialist in installing these box-units that reprogram the injection scheme. And the result? "We return to the vehicle's original power and torque, which translates into a 25% increase in power, and 35% in torque. And, with comparable driving, a 10% decrease in consumption!" Does he warn his customers of a risk regarding vehicle taxation? "No, there's a legal gray area there. And, since the market has literally exploded over the past two years, we've undertaken administrative steps to clarify the situation, but without results."
And the cost of such a modification? "It ranges from 500 to 1000 euros, depending on the vehicle model," Philippe Heeren also explains. The customer profile? "Good family men, not tuning enthusiasts." And safety? "We are certified in Germany according to TUV standards."
