He shares here a practitioner’s view on the tuning box — not from a competition cockpit, but from the seat of the everyday driver.
Spending years analysing the behaviour of competition cars, coaching drivers on circuit and working with professional teams forges a particular way of reading an engine. You learn to feel where the torque lies, how the engine responds at mid-throttle, what a smooth or hesitant transition out of a corner means.
When you apply that analytical framework to standard road vehicles, the observation is often the same: the vast majority of modern engines have more to offer than what the driver perceives on a daily basis. Not because the engineering is poor — quite the opposite — but because manufacturers calibrate their engines with significant safety margins, for industrial, regulatory or commercial reasons. This is precisely the space in which a well-designed tuning box operates.
In my field, there is a saying: the devil is in the details. A calibration that looks correct on paper can be catastrophic in practice if the electronics driving it are not up to the task. The tuning box follows the same logic. There are two categories of products on the market that in reality have almost nothing in common, other than the name.
The first is what I call resistor boxes. Devices that contain nothing but a passive component — a simple resistor — that modifies the signal sent to the ECU in a crude and unmodulated way. No onboard intelligence, no adaptation to driving conditions, no protection. These are the products that give the whole sector a bad name.
The second category is that of tuning boxes with genuine onboard electronics — and the difference is fundamental. At P-Tronic, for example, each tuning box incorporates a processing unit that analyses signals in real time and adjusts them dynamically, according to engine speed, load and driving conditions. It is not a fixed, blind modification: it is continuous, controlled optimisation working within the margins set by the manufacturer.
Another point I consider essential: the connectors. P-Tronic uses original manufacturer connectors — the same as those fitted in the factory to the vehicle’s wiring harness. This detail, which many buyers overlook, is in fact decisive. An approximate connector is a potential source of electronic interference, spurious fault codes, or even long-term degradation. An original connector is a transparent interface for the ECU — as if the tuning box had always been there.

Tom RensonnetThis is the most interesting development of recent years, and it deserves attention. In the most advanced tuning boxes, the action is no longer limited to a single signal — typically injection pressure. Some models act simultaneously on multiple parameters: turbo pressure, injection dynamics, sometimes torque management. This combined approach produces noticeably more coherent, more progressive results, closer to what engine remapping historically offered.
This point is all the more relevant today because a technical reality is gradually imposing itself: on a growing number of recent engines, direct reprogramming of the ECU is no longer possible. Manufacturers have locked down their ECUs ever more hermetically, for reasons of intellectual property, emissions approval or simply commercial policy. For these engines, the multi-parameter tuning box has de facto become the only accessible optimisation solution — and a serious one.
I find this evolution technically coherent: the tuning box industry had to raise its game precisely because the door to remapping was closing.
All of this remains technical. What interests the driver is what they feel behind the wheel. What I am talking about is response at mid-throttle. Smoothness pulling out of a roundabout. Overtaking on the road without having to downshift. Sensations every driver knows — or rather, whose absence is felt without always being able to name it. A serious tuning box acts on exactly these parameters, where the driver genuinely needs it: at low and mid-range revs.
What strikes me in my coaching work is that driving fluidity is often the first benefit people forget to look for — and the first they notice when they find it.

Tom RensonnetThe tuning box is not aimed at the driver chasing tenths of a second. It is aimed at the driver who wants their car to respond better, more naturally, in the situations they encounter every day. For a well-maintained combustion or hybrid engine, with the right product and realistic expectations, it is a sensible, reversible, clean and immediately perceptible optimisation.
But the right product has to be earned. Original connectors, genuine onboard electronics, multi-parameter action on the most advanced models: these are the criteria to demand. Not the lowest price.
