Rally driver, son and father of a driver, former dealer for 25 years, Larry Cols has built up an intimate knowledge of light commercial vehicles, first as a professional in the automotive world, today as a specialist in their preparation and fitting at LarryArt. He shares here a view grounded in real-world experience.
In our family, the Cols, the automobile is not a profession, it is a culture. My father Jean-Marie (“Didi”) was a rally driver and founded the family dealership. I also competed in rallying for more than ten years before taking over the business, then passing the baton to launch LarryArt. And my son Lény competes today in the championship, with the same passion and the same standards as the previous generations.
This immersion in the automotive world across three generations forges a particular way of looking at vehicles, seeing them not merely as technical objects but as tools whose real limits and hidden margins you know. And seeking out the small optimisations that make all the difference in day-to-day use.
A light commercial vehicle is a work tool. Its driver is not looking for comfort. He is looking for efficiency. Does the vehicle pull away loaded without straining? Does it hold pace up a hill with 800 kilos on board? Can you maintain a delivery schedule without the engine constantly at its limit?
These are the questions I ask when evaluating a tuning box on a commercial vehicle. And with a serious product like those from P-Tronic, the answers are positive. Not because the figures are impressive on a data sheet, but because the benefits are immediately perceptible in real working situations.
The first benefit is the management of variable load. A commercial vehicle does not always operate in the same conditions: empty in the morning, fully loaded in the afternoon, or the reverse. P-Tronic tuning boxes make it possible to adapt driving behaviour to the vehicle’s actual load by having sufficient reserve available. Then comes mechanical longevity. An engine that has the torque it needs to work in its optimal range puts less stress on the gearbox, less on the clutch, less on the drivetrain overall. On a vehicle covering 60,000 to 100,000 km a year, the return on investment is also reflected in the frequency of mechanical interventions, not just at the fuel pump.
« A well-optimised van is a tool that works better, for longer, at lower cost. It really is that simple. »
Larry ColsIn my business, I work on leased vehicles, fleets, vehicles that will be returned at the end of contract. Reversibility is not a theoretical matter for me. It is a practical constraint.
A P-Tronic tuning box connects to the original manufacturer connectors, with no modification to the on-board electronics. It is removed in a few minutes, leaving no trace whatsoever, even under diagnostic equipment. For a professional managing several vehicles with different contractual statuses, this is an essential guarantee.
A quality tuning box on a light commercial vehicle is a concrete response to concrete problems: load, hills, fuel consumption, mechanical longevity. It is not magic. It is engineering applied to a real use case. And in my line of work, that is exactly what you expect from a good product.
